When everything is fine on the outside

I'm successful but not happy

On the outside everything works: the job, the income, maybe a family. Inside there is a sense of emptiness that is hard to explain, and harder to say out loud, because from the outside it looks like you have nothing to complain about. It isn't ingratitude. It is usually a very concrete imbalance.

Why it is so hard to admit

People with visible results feel they have no permission to feel bad. Saying it sounds like a whim, so it goes unsaid. And what goes unsaid doesn't get looked at either.

The cost is that years go by improving what already works, because it is the only thing you can show.

Success usually measures one or two areas

What we call success is almost always career and money. That is two out of eight. You can be at 9 in those two and at 3 in fun, in relationships or in purpose, and the average won't show it.

The sense of emptiness usually comes from that distance between the high areas and the ones left behind, not from the high ones being wrong.

Looking at the ones nobody asks you about

Nobody asks how long it has been since you did something just because you like it, or how your relationship really is. Giving each area a number forces you to look at all of them, including the ones you had been avoiding.

The honest number only shows up when nobody is in front of you. That is why it is worth doing on your own.

What to do with what you find

You don't need to quit or change your life. It is enough to stop adding to what is already high and put one action a week into the area that fell furthest behind.

It is an adjustment of attention, not a break.

See which areas fell behind

You score your 8 areas and see your wheel right away. No account, no card, no email, and without telling anyone. It takes about 8 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I feel empty if I got what I wanted?

Because what you wanted was one part. Reaching a professional or financial goal exposes what was postponed to get there. It doesn't cancel the achievement: it shows what still needs attention.

Is this a midlife crisis?

Sometimes it coincides with that stage, but the mechanism is the same at any age: many hours in a few areas and very few in the rest.

Do I have to leave my job?

Generally, no. Most of the time the job is not the problem but the only thing getting attention. Before deciding something big, look at how the other seven areas are doing.

Is this depression?

We can't know that from an article, and wheelpath.app is not therapy and makes no diagnoses. If the emptiness comes with low energy, sleep problems or loss of interest in almost everything, see a mental health professional.
